Des' Health Tips

Des Lardner is a pharmacist with 32 retail experience as well as being a qualified herbalist. In addition he holds diplomas in Theology, Nutrition, Homoeopathy, Iridology and Ayurvedic (Indian) medicine.

Des is currently studying for a Masters Degree is Herbal Medicine at the Pharmacy Faculty of the University of Sydney.

Despite 32 years of experience in modern medicines, and the recipient of an international award in 1997 for his knowledge of modern medicine, it is perhaps surprising that he says modern drugs are overrated.

Des is scathing of modern foods, and believes 80% of disease is due to modern foods, ignorance, smoking and lack of exercise! He believes the future of medicine is in better education, particularly in bio-chemistry. “Ancient medicines are cheaper and bio-chemically more complex than modern medicines. In fact, they are more aligned to the complex nature of the human organism” he says.

Ten tips for good health

1. Pure water
Drink 6-8 glasses daily

2. Trace minerals
Everyone needs a good source of trace minerals. A good source is Celtic salt (contains 74 minerals). Fish or kelp is a good source or food from deep rooted plants (trees).

3. Green tea
One of the world's oldest tonics: despite all the Lipton's advertising, it is much better than modern tea.

4. Folic acid (2 pieces of fresh fruit daily)
Reduces homocysteine, a toxin involved in heart disease and other modern diseases. Folic acid is damaged by cooking processes.

5. Anti-oxidant vitamind and foods
Bright coloured vegetables, fruits and foods: olives, grape seeds, green tea, pumpkin and spices. Two thirds of your diet should be from plant derived foods (i.e. not meat, milk, cheese and yoghurt.)

6. Fish oil & fish
(and reduce saturated fats. Genesis 4:4, 1 Samuel 2:16). Prevents strokes, reduces blood pressure and improves inflammatory disease.

7. Garlic or bulbs
Eat daily. Reduces heart disease, blood pressure, cholesterol, and cancer in many studies.

8. Red wine
Or red and white grapes, but eat the seeds and skins, they are the healthy part. The Bible says of new wine grapes, "a miracle is in them" (viz. the seeds). (Isaiah 65:8). Red wine reduces cancer, heart disease, heart attacks, and strokes.

9. Eat more pulses (beans)
(Wash in lots of water). Reduce cholesterol & cancer risk. Improve bone strength, heart disease menopause symptoms & hormone function. Daniel 1:12-16.

10. Eat more herbs
e.g. Ginkgo=memory, Glucosamines= arthritis, Ginger= cold diseases, Brahmi= general tonic, Ginseng=elderly tonic. For men: Serenoa.=prostate. For Women: Vitex agnus castus= young tonic, or Dong quai (older over 50's tonic)
